Head Shot

While I was in basic training, a painful event happened in my life that directed my course in life. It came in a form of a punch from a drill sergeant. That day was just like any other training day. One of the activities that I can remember was a ‘low-crawling’ drill which is a very important training for moving in a hot battlefield. It came to me that facing sideways while crawling is a more efficient way to crawl because it prevents my helmet from digging into the ground. Unfortunately, it did not occur to me that that action will also expose my face to enemy gunfire. My drill sergeant was able to notice my deviant action and called me out. He suggested that my method of crawling needs to be changed. I stated my reason why I am doing it. Our exchange of words heated up until he ended up placing a slugger on my face.

Realizations and Reasoning

That action surprised us both. It was a career ender for a drill sergeant to hit a trainee. The New Army does not allow such behavior especially with officers. We were both aware of it. There was a temptation to report my drill sergeant. There were other trainees who even urged me to do so. I did not report him. I took into consideration the factors that led us to that fateful situation. All of didn’t have any sleep for 5 days. I was not acting correctly too as a trainee. I can not let him loose his career because of my laziness. Looking back, not reporting my drill sergeant was one of the decisions of my life that made me proud. I chose not to give in to emotions and let rational and fair thinking win.

Ready for the Challenge

I had a short but distinguished service in the army. I got married and became a father of a sweet little angel. I was able to continue my college education and graduated with honors from Texas University. I believe that I am ready to pursue a degree in your law school. My experience during my basic training days became an inspiration to settle grievances or any kind of problems with using reason and rationality. I understand that people do commit mistakes but it is up to us to think first before acting. I have faith in mankind that we could always settle things as civilized as possible without resorting to violence. I have learned that paying a wrong with ill intentions will never lead to anything good. The rule of an eye for an eye will just leave us all blind.
